Summer Work Experience 2026

MassHire Lowell Young Adult Career Center – 10 Hall Street, Lowell, MA 01854

The Summer Work Experience Program will begin between June 28, 2026 and July 5, 2026. Specific start and end days and times will vary. Eligible participants are low-income young adults who reside in Lowell, Dracut, Tyngsboro, Chelmsford, Billerica, Dunstable, Tewksbury or Westford and are between the ages 14 and 21. Other eligibility applies. This program is a first come, first complete program so following the instructions and following up with additional steps is important.

Summer Work Experiences are temporary placements and monitored by the MassHire Lowell Young Adult Career Center. They are not permanent jobs

All participants will be interviewed in person for appropriateness and eligibility. Participants are required to provide all appropriate documentation.

  • Young people interested in applying must be between 14 years of age and 21 years of age at the time of their eligibility interview.
    • Please note that only 10 spots for Young Adults aged 14-15 will be available for the summer program. Specific interview slots are available for this age group. Young people between the ages of 14-15 who sign up for interview slots for 16+ years of age will be notified that they cannot attend.
  • Please note that just because you have signed up for an interview does not mean that you will receive a placement (Summer job)
  • Dress for Success to your eligibility interview
  • Use your own personal email address to apply, not a parental or guardian email address or telephone number

Step 2 of 3: Obtain the Necessary Documents to Bring to the Interview

1. Social Security Card

2. Proof of Family Income – Proof of Low-Income Status (bring one of the following)

  • Free or reduced lunch letter from school that applied to you specifically (a blanket everyone receives free lunch in Massachusetts letter will not suffice for proof of income status)
  • TANF recipient- Provide Award Letter
  • SNAP recipient (food stamps)- Provide Award Letter
  • Foster Child- Provide letter from DCF
  • Homeless- Provide a letter from Shelter/Social Service Agency
  • P-EBT card

3. Proof of Age

  • United States Birth Certificate
  • Un-expired United States Passport
  • Un-expired Alien Registration Card
  • Other (ex. Naturalization papers)

4. Proof of Residency

  • Driver’s License/Driver’s Permit
  • Employment Permit (Work Permit)
  • Current bill
  • Report Card with Home Address- Print out from school

5. Picture ID

  • School ID
  • Driver’s License
  • Passport
  • Other Recognized identification

6. Other Important Items to Bring

  • Report Card or Progress Report
  • Court Documents (if applicable)
  • IEP or 504B plan (if applicable)

Living in a single Income Household

  • Provide a Parent/Guardian letter with signature denoting a single income

Experiencing Housing Insecurity

  • Provide a letter from Shelter, Host or EOHHS Agency

Identifying as having a disability

  • Provide the front page of your latest IEP/504

Person of Color

  • Application Identification sufficient- no additional documentation required

Member of the LGBTQ+ community

  • Self-Attestation Form required- will provide at time of interview if requested

Pregnant or Parenting

  • Birth Certificate of child/children or Doctors note from OBGYN must be provided

Limited English Fluency

  • Indication of ELL classes on report card or note from school on letterhead must be provided

Drop out from High School

  • Withdrawal letter from High School or enrollment letter in HiSet/GED classroom must be provided

Foster Care/Aged out of Foster Care

  • Letter from Foster Care Agency, EOHHS documentation or other agency form must be provided

DYS Committed

  • Letter from DYS social worker, case worker, or liaison must be provided

Juvenile Arrest/Probation/Gang Affiliated

  • Court or Police Records, Probation/DYS letter must be provided
